That is enough to create a noticeable change in the quality of daylight, but it is very different from a total solar eclipse.
You will not see the solar corona from Barcelona. The sky will not become completely dark and there will be no safe moment to look directly at the Sun without proper solar protection.
To experience totality, you need to travel to southern Spain.

One major advantage of the 2027 eclipse is its timing.
The 2026 eclipse happened very close to sunset, when the Sun was just a few degrees above the horizon. In 2027, maximum eclipse happens at around 10:58 in the morning, with the Sun much higher in the sky.
That means buildings, hills and the horizon are much less of a problem.
From Barcelona city centre, the Sun will be high enough above the horizon that you will have many more possible viewing locations than in 2026.
Barcelona will experience a partial eclipse from beginning to end. That means there is no safe moment to look directly at the Sun without protection.
Use certified solar viewing glasses or a safe handheld solar viewer complying with the ISO 12312-2 standard.

Best Places to Watch the 2027 Eclipse in Barcelona

What you mainly need is an open area with a clear view of the sky and enough space to observe safely.
Bogatell and Nova Icària Beaches
Barcelona's beaches are a much better option for the 2027 eclipse than they were in 2026.
The event happens during the morning, making the wide open skies along the waterfront especially practical.
Bogatell and Nova Icària also give you more space than the narrow streets of Barcelona's historic centre.
Probably the simplest option for visitors staying in central Barcelona.
Montjuïc
Montjuïc offers gardens, terraces and viewpoints spread across a large area.
Unlike a single famous lookout, there are several places around the hill where you can find an open view of the sky.
A very practical option if you want elevation without leaving the city.
Tibidabo and Collserola
Tibidabo and the Collserola ridge offer wide views across Barcelona and the Mediterranean.
The Fabra Observatory is also located in this area. Check its programme closer to August 2027, as Barcelona's astronomy institutions may organise special eclipse activities.
Excellent views, but expect strong interest if public events are announced.
Bunkers del Carmel
The Bunkers offer one of Barcelona's most famous panoramic views.
There is no astronomical reason you need to be this high for the 2027 eclipse, but the atmosphere and open views should make it a popular spot.
Great view, but not necessary if your priority is simply seeing the eclipse clearly.

This is where the 2027 eclipse becomes extraordinary.
The narrow path of totality crosses the Strait of Gibraltar and parts of southern Spain.
In Spain, totality will be visible from Ceuta and Melilla, almost all of Cádiz province, much of Málaga, and the southernmost parts of Granada and Almería.
Unlike Barcelona, observers inside this band will experience complete darkness and — weather permitting — see the Sun's corona during totality.

Málaga is another major city within the path of totality, making it particularly convenient for flights, accommodation and public transport.

Convenient and easy to reach, although exact totality duration varies across the province.
Melilla
Melilla will also experience one of the longest periods of totality anywhere in Spain.
A spectacular astronomical option if you are willing to plan the journey well in advance.

If you are planning to leave Barcelona and travel into the path of totality, it is worth studying the route carefully before choosing accommodation.
The specialist astronomy website National Eclipse has detailed information about the 2027 eclipse and its route through southern Spain, North Africa and the Middle East.
You can also use its 2027 total solar eclipse maps to see exactly where the limits and centreline of the path of totality run.
This matters because being just outside the totality line gives you a partial eclipse, not a shorter version of totality.
Can You Travel from Barcelona to See Totality?
Yes — but this is very different from the 2026 eclipse.
In 2026, totality crossed southern Catalonia, meaning Barcelona visitors could reach the total eclipse zone relatively easily.
In 2027, the totality band is at the opposite end of Spain.
If seeing totality is important to you, we would not recommend trying to travel from Barcelona on the morning of the eclipse.
Instead, spend at least the previous night in Andalusia, Ceuta or Melilla.
Málaga is one of the simplest options in terms of transport and accommodation, while Cádiz gives you a longer total phase.
The closer you move toward the centre of the totality path, the longer the complete eclipse generally lasts.
The 2 August 2027 eclipse is expected to attract enormous international interest.
National Eclipse notes that this eclipse reaches a maximum duration of more than six minutes elsewhere along its global route, making it one of the longest total eclipses of the century.
Accommodation, flights and transport inside Spain's totality zone are likely to become increasingly difficult and expensive as the date approaches.
2026 vs 2027: Which Eclipse Is Better from Barcelona?
If you are watching specifically from Barcelona, 2026 is the more dramatic eclipse.
On 12 August 2026, Barcelona experienced an extremely deep partial eclipse of around 99.7%.
On 2 August 2027, approximately 81.7% of the solar disc will be covered.
But 2027 has one major advantage: visibility.
The 2026 eclipse reached maximum just before sunset, with the Sun extremely low above the western horizon.
In 2027 the maximum happens at 10:58 in the morning, with the Sun much higher in the sky.
That makes the 2027 eclipse much easier to observe from almost anywhere with an open view of the sky.
